Frequently Asked Questions

Material

I am open for suggestions to work with you on your preferred music genre and your needs to become a better musician. I generally divide lesson time into repertoire, technique, theory/music history/rhythm categories. I use different method books depending on the student’s learning style, they are the Bastien, Faber Piano Adventures, or Pathway to Artistry.

Duration

Lesson time depends on the age and level of students– 30mins for younger beginners, 45mins for intermediate, 1 hour for early advance onwards. These are general guidelines as everyone is different in their learning preference. Adult beginners are encouraged to start with a 45mins lesson, as the ability to focus is generally longer than younger learners.

Make-up lessons and refunds

I understand that students will miss lessons due to illness, inclement weather, family emergencies, or other issues that may arise. If you know you are going to miss a lesson, at least 24hours notice is required to provide make-up lessons, though I cannot guarantee that each missed lesson will be made up. Each student is allowed 3 missed lessons per semester.

Teacher’s absence

Illness or other emergencies may arise which prevent me from offering a lesson at a scheduled time. If I am unable to provide a scheduled lesson due to illness or other reasons, make-up lessons will be scheduled at a time when I and the student are available. Any lesson that the teacher cancelled will be made up. Make-up lessons will be held in-person or online.

Summer

I take-off during summer break most of the time, thus, I couldn’t provide in-person lessons. Lessons can be provided via Zoom or Forte.

Practice expectation

Students should aim for at least 6 days of practice per week. Duration depends on the level for each student, it could range anytime from 15 minutes to 2 hours per day. Parents should help their child to include piano practice in their daily routine, as each lesson contains a different practice method. A general guide would be:

Beginner:      20-30 mins/day

Intermediate: 45mins- 1 hour/day.

Advanced:     Approximately 30mins–1 hour per piece.

Students can divide the total practice time into multiple sessions as part of an interleave practice. A practice logbook is recommended to keep track of practice objectives.
